JJ Hahn is premium wine made from what is now heritage vineyard planted by the Hahn family over several generations. This family settled on their original land in 1846.

JJ Hahn is a unique partnership between vigneron James Hahn and winemaker Rolf Binder .The inaugural vintage was 1997 when two barrels each of aged shiraz and cabernet were made.

All JJ Hahn wine is produced exclusively from the Hahn family vineyards located in the heart of the Barossa Valley.

HAHN HOMESTEAD

The Hahn Homestead property, located between Nuriootpa and Tanunda, has been occupied by the Hahn family since 1846.  As some of the first settlers in the Barossa Valley they had the choice of some of the best land. This was known to the locals as 'Big Red Gum' country. They are, in fact, the oldest homesteading family in the Barossa Valley, having continuously occupied the original homestead since it was completed in 1848. The house is currently occupied by sixth generation descendant, James, with his wife, Jackie, and their children (seventh generation.). The first commercial planting of vines on this land was by Gottfried Hahn in 1890.

SHIRAZ

The oldest surviving vines are 3.5 acres of  the 1914 planting of shiraz, planted by Hermann, the eldest son of  Gottfried. Planted on 'Big Red Gum' country, the soil is red clay over limestone and the roots descend more than 2 metres into the restrictive ground. This enables the old vines to "grunt" their way to final ripeness.

In 1928 another section of land was planted to shiraz vines by Hermann with his son Walter. Of this planting 4 acres remain. The soil is the same as the 1914 shiraz but management is varied to stress them a little less through the use of straw mulching.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The '1979' Cabernet Sauvignon is made from cabernet vines planted in 1979 on the Homestead property. Reginald, the son of Walter, was responsible for this planting. The baby of the vineyards, it is just reaching maturity as it approaches 30 years of age. Again it is on the 'Big Red Gum' soil, enabling it to develop classic big fruit flavors.
