JJ w HAHN 1979 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
This single vineyard wine is made by Rolf Binder from cabernet sauvignon grapes planted on the Hahn Homestead property in 1979.
It is the youngest vineyard in the JJ Hahn portfolio.
The Vineyard
The Hahn Homestead vineyard is situated on the floor of the Barossa Valley, between Nuriootpa and Tanunda. This land has been continuously farmed by the Hahn family since 1846, with vineyard being gradually planted from the 1890s.
The vineyard surrounds the Hahn family house which was built in 1846-1848 and is lived in today by James Hahn and his family, 6th and 7th generation descendants. They are the oldest homestead family in the Barossa Valley. It was James' father, Reginald, who planted these cabernet vines in 1979.
The grapes from this block were sold to local Barossa Valley wineries until 1997 when the first vintage of 2 barrels was made for JJ Hahn.
The soil is medium loam over deep red clay over limestone/red clay. Classic cabernet country. The same soil as a neighbouring vineyard that produced the classic "Seppelts Dorrien Cabernet Sauvignon" for many years.
The vines stress gradually into ripening, reaching high baume levels, this always being the last block harvested for JJ Hahn, generally in late April. The cabernet sauvignon from this vineyard produces consistent high quality every year.
